My Native Dreams Gallery and Art Studio offers a wide variety of art classes including one of the most exciting an unusual we have seen.
Hung on the walls and scattered through the shelves of the gallery you will see stunning works of art that resemble a cosmic swirl of colors. You can get lost in the marbled mix of shades, whirls, and dots. It is easy to see animal shapes, galaxies full of stars or a myriad of images hidden in the paint.
Our Pour Painting adventure began by picking out our three favorite or preferred colors. While our instructor poured our paint colors into individual paper cups we put on our aprons. Our instructor added Floetrol to each paint color to reduce streaks and improve the flow and leveling abilities of the paint. In addition to our three colors, we also used black and white paint.
Our instructor started out by applying a generous amount of white paint and Floetrol over the blank canvas, smoothing the paint edge to edges, covering the whole thing. Then she used a small handheld torch quickly heating the surface to bring up and pop any bubbles in the paint.
We were instructed to start pouring portions of all five paints into a small paper cup, layering them as we pleased. Once this was completed we placed a wide flat trowel over the cup opening and holding it over the canvas flipped it upside down, setting the trowel down on the canvas. The trowel was quickly pulled out letting the layers of paint spill out onto the canvas in a rainbow of colors. We then picked up the canvas and started tilting it from side to side letting the paint run off the edges and the layers of color spread out across the surface. It was a beautiful experience watching the paint layers twirl and come to the top. Once we were satisfied with the way the paint had spread over the canvas our instructor went over the paint again with the torch bringing up more colorful bubbles, making constellations of colored stars.
The dry time for each piece is 24 hours so you will have to come back to the gallery to pick it up.
If you are interested in making your own Pour Paint art call the gallery and set up a time. They can take up to 8 people at a time and larger groups can be accommodated with advance notice.
